Pinterest Fast-Tracks ‘Today Tab’ To Inspire People At Home

Verona, Italy - April 9, 2012: close-up view of a white third generation iPad (2012) showing the Pinterest website. Pinterest is a social network focused on images.

As many of us shut down in our households, Pinterest has seen significant growth in use cases like ideas for cooking quickly and easily, crafts and lesson plans for kids, tips for growing vegetables and more.

This past weekend there was an all-time high in activity around the world, with more searches and saves of Pins on the platform than any other weekend in Pinterest’s history. Globally, Pinterest saw the highest rates of user engagement in the history of the platform in countries like the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

In response, Pinterest has fast-tracked the launch of the Today tab, a new source of daily inspiration with curated topics and trending Pins. The platform is featuring expert information from the World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control on topics like handwashing during the coronavirus epidemic over the following weeks. In addition, Pinterest will show ideas for kid-friendly baking, work from home setups, family-favorite movies, comfort food recipes, and more.

Pinterest users just need to click “Today” at the top of their home feeds from iOS or Android for new ideas each day. Recommendations will include a handful of topics. Pinterest will start with ideas curated by the Pinterest team and in the future will also feature guest editors. While the home feed continues to be a personalized space with recommendations based on the Pinner’s activity, the Today tab will show popular ideas based on what’s going on in the world and what people are searching for. The Today tab is starting to roll out on mobile apps in the U.S. and U.K., with more countries to come.

In the past few weeks, searches for “calming quotes” doubled and “stress relief” and “stress quotes” have tripled, and so Pinterest has launched compassionate search on web, to make the mental wellness feature available on all devices. That means when people search for terms like “stressed out” from their desktop computer or phone, they’ll see the option to check out a collection of emotional wellbeing activities to help relax and feel better with content from emotional health experts.

These are just a few pieces of Pinterest’s efforts to make reliable information easily accessible on the platform, which also includes:

·         A custom search experience featuring results from experts (image here)

·         Prohibiting ads that claim to offer cures or treatments or that are looking to exploit the crisis

·         A banner across the site that leads to COVID-related information, including content from the World Health Organization

·         An easy way to report health misinformation through the “health misinformation” option on Pins. Pinterest is removing any misinformation it finds about COVID-19 because it violates the company’s health misinformation policy (which has been in place since 2017).

·         A Stay safe, stay inspired board shared with Pinners

·         A curation of helpful COVID-19 related information featured globally

A look at global trending searches over the past few weeks:

·         Searches for stay at home kids activities are up +4055 per cent

·         Work from home with kids searches are up +1657 per cent

·         Searches for wWork from home jokes are up +3802 per cent

·         Tips for working from home are up 1,411 per cent
