Study: Average Aussie Uses 36 Apps Per Month

Mobile app market data and insights company App Annie has released its Spotlight on Consumer App Usage Report across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, with data relating specifically to Australians and our use of apps.

The report looks at statistics such as total number of apps in use, average number of apps on each phone, time spent in particular apps, and what we do with our digital time – for example entertainment, banking, productivity, gaming and social media.

On average, people use 30 apps per month. Australians come out ahead in this statistic, using 36 per month. We have an average of just under 100 apps on our phones, which comes out ahead of Americans and Europeans, who have around 90 each respectively.

Apps are very much a daily habit for Australians, who use on average more than 10 different apps throughout their daily routine, according to the report.

Additionally, the study found that amongst Aussies:

  • iPhone users prioritise utilities apps (six), followed by social networking apps (five), and finally productivity and photo/video apps (four) per quarter.
  • Android users have more game apps on their phones than iPhone users (two), but also have fewer social media apps.
  • Tools (five), communications and productivity (four each) apps are top of the list for Android.
  • Australians find, and stay loyal to one app for music, navigation, finance and travel, which each record less than one app per user, per quarter.

The time we spend using our phone apps is increasing, according to the report. Year-on-year, we have progressed from almost 100 minutes per day in Q1 of 2015, to over 110 minutes in Q1 of 2016, and are now over 130 minutes per day in Q1 of 2017.

This places us in roughly the same position as the US, but a long way behind our neighbours in Indonesia (over 220 minutes per day in Q1 of 2017).

As for time spent in individual apps, Australian Android users spend an average of 20 minutes per day in their favourite app, out of an average total time of around 110 minutes. That equates to just under 19 per cent of time spent in the one place.

Where we fall significantly behind some of our APAC neighbours, however, is the realm of mobile gaming. While Australians spend an average of 30 minutes a day playing mobile games, Singaporeans are playing for an average of over 80 minutes, which is similar to South Korea and Japan.

The US, France, Germany and Brazil play for slightly more than 30 minutes per day, whereas the UK, Mexico and India play for slightly less time.
