Google’s ‘frustration’ in Australia

The new head of Google Australia has spoken of her frustration at the country’s lack of recognition of the potential the NBN brings.

Maile Carnegie, who took on the top job in July, has also expressed her belief that the Australian government should follow Britain’s lead and put public services online.

Carnegie told the Sydney Morning Herald: “I look at the energy around the NBN. At the moment, it’s focused around cost. I’d love to talk about the benefits and how we can change the rhetoric from cost to disruption.

“It’s a little bit frustrating in Australia. It feels like we could be on the cusp of renewal but I’m afraid that we’re not recognising the benefits.”

She said Australia should be taking note of the British government’s “digital by default” approach to government services, as it is cost and time-saving.

Carnegie told the SMH she has been in touch with Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull and is waiting for the election aftermath to die down before “going down to Canberra to talk to folks”.

Telecommunications analyst  Paul Budde added: “It’s very frustrating. Malcolm Turnbull is going to spend $30 billion on the NBN but at the moment digital economy hardly features in the government policies. Google is definitely a company that can assist and lift that issue.”
