“The Concept Is Completely Bonkers”: 10’s Stephen Tate On Season Two Of The Masked Singer

Monday the 13th September was the official premiere of The Masked Singer Australia‘s second star-studded (and also feather, sequin and glitter-studded) season.

On the episode launch, 10 ViacomCBS’s senior vice president, content and programming, Daniel Monaghan said, “Australia’s favourite guessing game was back with a vengeance last night capturing all the family fun, frivolity and excitement that is synonymous with such a bonkers show!”

“We’re thrilled with how The Masked Singer – Launch Reveal performed on its highly anticipated return to our platforms. And the reveal of Volcano as international superstar Vinnie Jones left the judges stunned, viewers amazed and set social media ablaze!”

B&T sat down with 10’s head of entertainment and factual programs Stephen Tate (not pictured above) to discuss the new series.

B&T: What differentiates The Masked Singer from 10’s other entertainment shows?

ST: The Masked Singer’s only purpose is to bring joyful family entertainment to Australian homes. Let’s face it, the concept is completely bonkers, but I think that’s why it was one of the top entertainment shows in 2020.

How have you adapted the show to make sure it appeals to an Australian audience?

The concept actually originated in South Korea, but the first US series was absolutely huge and ambitious. We made this our bar when creating the Aussie Masks.

We were so thrilled that Tim Chappel agreed to design our masks, and you’d have to agree his designs are spectacular.

In fact, many international versions of Masked Singer are now asking to borrow Tim’s masks after our series wraps.

What can we expect from the contestants in this season’s competition?

I shouldn’t say this, but if there is any positive to come out of COVID, it’s that some extraordinary artists have agreed to don a mask this year. You won’t believe your ears!

Why do you think celebrity-focused reality TV competitions have stood the test of time?

Reality television is the ultimate form of people watching, something we all love to do – celebrities just take it to the next level.

Last year, the Masked Singer performed very well in the ratings – how will you be capitalising on that momentum?

We are hoping to build on last year’s success and certainly if the talent we have attracted are any indication, we will have a fantastic season.
