Wieden + Kennedy London Interns Create Beach Towels Showing The Signs Of Skin Cancer
Two creative interns at W+K London were given the task of designing a product they were passionate about for their portfolio.
The results? Three beach towels representing different skin tones, showing the signs of melanoma. They created the towels in partnership with Skcin, a skin cancer charity based in London.
Hannah Young and Aleksandra Atanasovski, the designers, have now joined the agency as junior creatives.
Dubbed the Sun&See beach towels, the towels retails at £29.99, approximately AU$56.

On the Sun&See website, the creators have written an explainer about melanoma and the inspiration behind the project: “[Melanoma is] A potentially life-threatening skin cancer that can develop in moles. It’s disproportionately high in young adults and is one of the biggest killing cancers in the 15-34 age group.”
“These towels are not only designed to look trendy, but most importantly teach you the warning signs for early detection as well as how to prevent skin cancer by adopting simple sun safe strategies.”
The towels are available in the shades pearl prevention, sand safety and bronze aware.
According to Muse by CLIO, Young said of the design, “the towel was inspired by the markings of a really popular animal print—cheetah. We could see how the spots could be easily translated into moles.”
“Growing up in a generation where getting the ‘perfect’ suntan was socially desired, we had previously looked into skin safety and knew about the warning signs to look out for. So we created our own pattern using these signs to create a useful and educational beach towel, making it easier to check yourself.”
