COVID Lockdown Becomes Metaphor For Confronting Gun Control Message In US Schools

Lockdowns may have proven a great way of stopping the COVID spread but in the US it’s also had another advantage – a dramatic drop in high school shootings.

Playing on the idea, advocacy group Change The Ref has used the idea of lockdown to again call for tighter gun controls in the States.

There’s also concerns that mental health issues have been exacerbated by lockdown and that could also play out in more gun violence.

The powerful spot is the work of Ogilvy and has a deliberately provocative tagline of “Bring back lockdown”. Check it out below:

Change the Ref founder Manuel Oliver lost his son, Joaquin, to a school shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida in February 2018. Joaquin was one of 17 students killed.

Commenting on the work, Oliver said: “Gun laws and regulations continue to fall short of securing the safety of our schools. The ‘Bring Back Lockdown’ campaign is an important moment to push the gun control conversation back into the forefront and incite change.

“This campaign is a call to action and acknowledgment that there is a stark contrast in gun violence in schools since the onset of COVID-related lockdowns. It is my goal with this campaign to inspire Americans to push their reps to fight for stricter gun laws to be passed so that schools can be a safe place for our children.”
