Study: Aussies Clueless On Standard Drink Measures, So Brewer Launches Standard Drink Beer

Study: Aussies Clueless On Standard Drink Measures, So Brewer Launches Standard Drink Beer

For years now, Australians have been bombarded with directives about standard drinks, but recent research shows that most of us don’t have a proper understanding about standard drinks and moderation.

An Ipsos poll of 1000 Australians found that nearly half (48 per cent) of those surveyed don’t actually know what a ‘Standard Drink’ refers to and more than half (56 per cent) can’t confidently count how many standard drinks they have consumed on any given occasion.

And many people would say it’s easy to be confused, given alcoholic beverages such as beer can range from anywhere between 0.7 to 1.5 standard drinks per serve and even more if you are drinking pints at the pub.

Dr Ross Walker, one of Australia’s leading preventative health experts, says the recent research results are unsurprising, but worrying for Australians trying to drink responsibly.

“Australians are still unaware about how to moderate and monitor their drinking. It’s astounding that in 2021, 90 per cent of Aussies don’t know how many standard drinks are in a pint of full-strength beer,” Dr Walker said.

So, what is a standard drink? Dr Walker says that a standard drink is a unit of measure for alcohol.

“It is exactly 12.5mL or 10g of pure alcohol (no matter the beverage) and takes the average person about one hour for the body to metabolise that amount of alcohol out of their blood stream”, said Dr Walker.

This means, that many well-meaning and responsible drinkers who have one to two drinks in a night, may actually be consuming two to four standard drinks. The beer maths is confusing and downright annoying for anyone just trying to enjoy a couple of beers with mates.

Well now, Australians can confidently say they have found the beer they can count on thanks to ONE, a new thirst-quenching lager serving exactly one standard drink in every can.

Naturally brewed without additives or preservatives and using only the finest barley malt, hops and the purest water, ONE Classic Lager comes in a 500mL can, which is up to 50 per cent more beer than many other brands – prolonging the enjoyment of cracking open a refreshing and full-flavoured beer, while still drinking responsibly. ONE also has 25 per cent less calories than most other beer brands.

Spokesperson and beer industry veteran Mark Truelson says ONE is for beer lovers who want to make smarter choices without compromising on great taste or the amount of beer they can drink.

“We know that Australian drinkers are starting to heed the health and wellness messages, with 72 per cent of Aussies stating that they are drinking under the recommended amount of alcohol to consume in a week. For those people in particular, ONE helps them keep track of their drinks while also watching their calorie intake,” Mr Truelson said.

“We are proud to be bringing something to the market that helps Australians make better choices when they still want to enjoy a drink with mates.”
