Birds of Prey pulled $3.8M in its opening weekend.

It’s still a strong start to the year, the 3rd highest opening weekend of 2020 so far. Superhero event films still prove their magnetism, being the top film for all ages under 55, according to Val Morgan.

The next most popular film across the weekend was 1917, which has barely dropped week on week. It keeps its lead as the highest-grossing title of 2020. It’s also the highest title among all under 55s, with an even gender split.

Here’s how the rest of the weekend went.

Oscars 2020 Wrap – The 92nd Academy Awards

In a historical first, Parasite, the South Korean film everyone is buzzing about, does a strong sweep of the 2020 Oscars. It comes as a mild but nonetheless pleasant surprise, upsetting precedented favourite 1917 which had been winning the Picture awards at all bellwether events.

Parasite had a total of 6 nominations and walked away with 4 majors: Best Picture, Best Director, Best International, and Best Original Screenplay. Bong Joon-ho is only the 2nd foreign director to win for Best Director (Alfonso Cuarón won for Roma last year), and Parasite is the first foreign language film to ever win Best Picture.

Earlier in the evening, it became the first South Korean film to win any Oscar at all when it took original screenplay for Bong Joon-ho and co-writer Han Jin Won, and it was also the first South Korean film to even be nominated in Best International Film.

“When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart, which is, ‘The most personal is the most creative’. That quote is from our great Martin Scorsese. When I was in school, I studied Martin Scorsese’s films. Just to be nominated was a huge honor.

“When people in the U.S. were not familiar with my films, Quentin [Tarantino] always put my films on his list. He’s here, thank you so much.

“And Todd [Phillips] and Sam [Mendes], great directors that I admire. If the Academy allows, I would like to get a Texas chainsaw, split the Oscar trophy into five and share it with all of you.”
