Box Office Wrap: Midway Earns $1.14M On Weekend Debut

It appears Australians can’t get enough of war movies, with the latest war spot to hit the big screens down under – Midway – posting $1.14m on its debut.

The American war film is based on the Attack on Pearl Harbor and the subsequent Battle of Midway during World War II. Directed by Roland Emmerich, who produced the film with Harald Kloser, and written by Wes Tooke, the film features an ensemble cast, including Ed Skrein, Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Nick Jonas, Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid, Tadanobu Asano, and Woody Harrelson.

In other news, 1917 is the number one highest grossing film for 2020 and dominated the BAFTAs over the weekend with seven wins including best film and best director – a frontrunner for both awards at next week’s Oscars.

The film is attracting a surprisingly young audience (1 in 4 aged 14-24) and even 50:50 gender split, which is unusual for a WWI drama, according to Val Morgan.

In general cinema news, cinema admissions are up 6.8 per cent YOY, while key buying demos (24-54) are up 8.1 per cent YOY, according to Val Morgan.
