Gucci Apologises After ‘Blackface’ Jumper Bungle

Gucci has issued an apology on twitter following social media backlash over a ‘blackface’ turtleneck jumper.

The luxury fashion brand apologised and removed the item from sale after social media users criticised Gucci, pointing out the jumper when pulled up made it look like the wearer was dressed in blackface.

The black turtleneck, which was reportedly on sale for more than $1,200, pulls up over the wearer’s nose and has a cut-out ring around the mouth resembling oversized lips.

In a statement posted to Twitter, the brand said it had removed the item from sale, both online and in its stores.

Many Twitter users were quick to point out the racial misstep highlighted a lack of diversity within Gucci.

One tweet said: “If you hire more black people and cultivate an environment where people on all levels of the company feel comfortable to speak up, incidents like this will be avoided”.
