Australian Government Suspends All Its YouTube Advertising

Google’s woes continue apace with the Australian Government banning all its advertising on the Google-owned YouTube platform over fears the material is being shown before hate and extremist videos.

The Government’s decision to pull its advertising follows bans imposed by a number of high profile Australian businesses that include Telstra, Toyota, Hyundai, Vodafone and Bunnings.

And the Aussie government is a big spender on digital, over the financial year 2015-2016 it spent a reported $57 million on digital advertising in one form or another.

The other problem for advertisers is not only their ads being seen against the content, but part of the monies also goes to the content creator.

Australian Special Minister for State Scott Ryan said on Friday its decision to suspend its non-corporate campaign advertising from YouTube would prevent “any taxpayer funds inadvertently flowing to unsavoury organisations through the YouTube platform”.

“This measure is preventative and while advertising is being withdrawn from some websites, the government will continue to communicate important messages to Australians with other means,” he said.
