Is This The End For Coke? Americans Now Drink More Bottled Water!

For the first time ever, Americans drank more bottled water in 2016 than they did soft drinks (or soda, as they prefer to call it).

According to data by marketing firm Beverage Marketing, our American friends scoffed 48.5 billion litres of bottled water last year.

The average American drank 147.6 litres of bottled water in 2016, just nudging out the amount of soft drink they drank at 145.7 litres. That’s the first time that H2O has surpassed its sugary cousin in the bought drink stakes.

And it appears the health message is finally getting through, with average soft drink consumption falling from its high of 189 litres per year per American in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Commenting on the findings, Beverage Marketing’s CEO Michael Bellas said: “Bottled water effectively reshaped the beverage marketplace.

“When Perrier first entered the country in the 1970s, few would have predicted the heights to which bottled water would eventually climb.

“Where once it would have been unimaginable to see Americans walking down the street carrying plastic bottles of water, or driving around with them in their cars’ cup holders, now that’s the norm,” Bellas said.

However, it’s not all bad news for the likes of Coca-Cola and rival Pepsi. The two have invested heavily in its bottled water ranges (and flavoured milk) over the last decade and reportedly make a far better margin on water than they do on sugary soda drinks.

Pepsi even bought a 30-second Super Bowl ad to debut it’s new premium bottled water brand, “LIFEWTR.” Check the spot out below:
