Nike’s Hijab Ignites Calls For Customer Boycott Over “Oppression Of Women”

Angry Nike customers are calling for a boycott of the sportswear giant’s products after it announced it was releasing a Nike hijab for Muslim sportswomen. Read B&T’s original story here.

The sportswear company said it had developed the product after Muslim athletes had complained of having to wear a traditional hijab, while it was hoped it would also prompt more women to take up competitive sport.

Although not due for release until next year, it’s already being worn by some athletes including Emirati figure skater Zahra Lari (below).

But a protest against the headwear is gathering pace online, not so much in its anti-Muslim sentiment but many believing the hijab is demeaning and normalises the oppression of women. Check out some of the social media rage below:
