Sony Looking Into Placing Ads In Their Upcoming Games

The Japanese gaming giant, Sony, is reportedly working on bringing advertisements to its free-to-play games for the PlayStation consoles.

The report comes from Insider, which claims that this new feature, which is still being tested, would help game developers get more money out of their products by placing in-game billboards of ads and other product placements, such as character skins.

The feature could also come in an entirely different form, such as giving initiatives to players to watch advertisements, such as in-game rewards (currency, etc.), however, some of the details still remain vague. For example, Sony has yet to make clear if they plan to take any part of the ad revenues for themselves or if they want developers and companies to pay for consumer data.

The PlayStation developer has outlined that they will maintain a strict policy on in-game advertisements by having ad tech companies go through a strict screening process before they allow their products to be advertised on their platform, while it won’t allow the collection of personal information such as e-mail addresses.

If this report is true, then developers should be able to add product placement within their games by the end of the year.

This information comes just a few days after Microsoft, Sony’s main rival in the gaming department, announced that they too were planning to take a similar approach with their free-to-play games on the Xbox family of consoles.

It also comes in the wake of streaming service providers, such as Netflix, announcing that they too were creating an environment that is more open to advertisers, setting what could possibly be described as a new digital world of opportunities for marketers.
