Think Cannes in Cairns, presented by Pinterest, couldn’t get better? Think again.

King Stingray has been storming Aussie airwaves since 2020. Now the five-piece Yolŋu surf rock combo will bring their raw, wild, free beats and profound love of Country to Cannes in Cairns as Pinterest’s welcome party headliner.

You may already be familiar with King Stingray’s epic sound from their partnership with Tourism Australia, where their cover of Men At Work’s “Land Down Under” features in their recent Come And Say G’Day campaign:

Singing the sensational band’s praises, Chief Marketing Officer from Tourism Australia, Susan Coghill, said:

“One of my favourite elements of our most recent Come and Say G’day campaign, is the inclusion of a cover of the classic Aussie song Down Under by rock band King Stingray, who sing in both English and Yolŋu Matha, an Indigenous language from northeast Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory (where the hails from).

“We knew we wanted a sound that was instantly recognisable for our international audience, but we also wanted something that felt fresh and represented modern Australia. The self-described ‘Yolngu surf-rock’ band nailed our brief.

“The first time we heard Down Under (Under One Sun) was incredibly emotional. There was an immediate connection to the track and even some tears. Their re-imagined cover is bold, welcoming and the use of language and Yidaki (didgeridoo) and bilma (clapsticks) sounds stirs goosebumps.

“It has truly been amazing to work with King Stingray and highlight a new and thriving generation of Indigenous cultural leaders on the world stage. I have no doubt that they have an incredible and exciting future ahead of them. The band has ties to two iconic Indigenous Australian bands, Yothu Yindi and Warumpi Band, and recently their self-titled debut album was nominated for five ARIAs including Best Album. We look forward to continuing our partnership with them.

“Having seen them perform live at our global brand campaign launch in New York City, I can hand on heart say that those attending Cannes in Cairns are in for a real treat! You won’t want to miss their set.”
