TV Ratings Yearly Wrap: Seven Wins Eyeballs & Nine Claims Demos

Seven has been crowned this year’s ratings winner in terms of audience share. however, Nine has made it clear they won key demos.

Basically, while Seven had the eyeballs, Nine is claiming that though it had fewer people watching, it had the right people watching! Interesting right?

So are Nine just sore losers, or do they have a point?

Meanwhile, 10 is remaining quiet amongst the noise – though they came in third.

So let’s break it down a little bit more.

While Seven may not have won the year in good publicity, between Georgia Love, Sam Forst and misidentifying Cleo Smith’s abductor.  Seven won the most weeks of the 38 weeks in the ratings.

As usual, Seven News proved a clear winner for the network and The Voice earned the title of top entertainment show –  of course, The Voice was formally Nines – ouch.

Seven’s Home and Away also snagged number one Australian drama, Better Homes and Gardens grabbed number one lifestyle show and The Chase won number one daily quiz show.

Seven also won the morning show wars, with Sunrise coming in first, though Nine’s Today wasn’t far behind.

Seven also claimed the top title with or without the inclusion of the Olympic Games Toyko 2020 coverage. So it’s a pretty sweet victory for Seven.

Still, it wasn’t all wins, Big Brother VIP failed to connect with a solid audience this year which was a disappointment for the network, the finale ended with less than 350,000 viewers!

Meanwhile, on Nine, the network is claiming wins in demographics,

Across the primary channel shares (primetime), the network won the following key demographics of 25-54s (25.7 per cent), 16-39s (24 per cent) and Grocery Shopper + Child (27.9 per cent).

Basically, the network is engaging with key consumers which do tend to keep advertisers happy!

Nine also did some big wins a programming wise year, Beauty and the Geek won number one reality show followed by Nine’s Married At First Sight – despite the endless controversy surrounding it was also a winner.

The Block was also a strong performer and A Current Affairs nabbed number one news and current affair show.

Still, despite the successes, the network failed to get the same numbers as Seven.

But does that really matter if they are keeping advertisers happy?

Well, the answer –  it just depends who you ask!

As for 10, while they aren’t claiming any big wins, I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here saw solid ratings, and Have You Been Paying Attention was TV’s biggest 8.30 pm show. However, The Bachelorette failed to find a big audience.

Meanwhile, in the world of Foxtel, Sky News delivered record audience share across all platforms in 2021, proving it has become a major player in the world of news and current affairs.

Though they did severe relationships with Alan Jones – the parrot is now uncaged!

Until next year.
