The Australian Financial Review has issued an apology and agreed on an out-of-court financial settlement with iSignthis CEO John Karantzis.

The settlement comes after Karantzis accused the AFR of implying that he was involved in money laundering. The allegations referred to two articles published in July last year headlined ‘Etherstack pump straight from iSignthis playbook’ and ‘More alternative facts from iSignthis boss John Karantzis’.

They were written by controversial columnist Joe Aston (pictured) and Myriam Robin, according to The Australian.

Now, beneath both articles reads the apology: “On July 2 and 7, 2020, The Australian Financial Review published articles entitled “Etherstack pump straight from iSignthis playbook” and “More alternative facts from iSignthis boss John Karantzis”. The articles referred to Nickolas John Karantzis and his company iSignthis.”

“Mr Karantzis considered the articles suggested he was aware of, or involved in, money laundering. The Financial Review did not intend to make such an allegation and if any readers took the article to mean that, it retracts them.”

“The Financial Review unreservedly apologises to Mr Karantzis for the hurt and distress caused to him by reason of the publication of the article and for any damage to his reputation.”

A legal letter was sent this week to Karantzis, where Nine Entertainment’s executive counsel Larina Alick also apologised for the articles.

The specific details of the financial settlement are as yet unknown.
