A new weekly newsletter from the Australian Financial Review will focus on the public sector, policy making and the intersection between government and key stakeholders.

Edited by the AFR’s government editor and Walkley Award winner Tom Burton, ‘Inside Government’ will provide expert analysis of the main developments in government and regulatory decisions, initiatives and developments, and how those decisions impact business and the wider community.

Released every Friday and running alongside the AFR’s already-strong daily coverage of the public sector, Inside Government will be essential reading for government and business professionals.

Burton has previously worked in government, specialising in the communications sector, and has held senior editorial roles with The Mandarin, The Sydney Morning Herald and as Canberra bureau chief for the AFR.

“Through its own businesses and regulation, government heavily influences around 50 per cent of the entire economy,” Burton said in a statement. “Government directly gate keeps around 30 per cent of the economy, and while there is extensive political reporting, there is remarkably little coverage of the engine room of government and the public sector.

“Public policy, regulation and the delivery of a vast array of services are all driven by Australia’s 1.2 million public servants and their leaders.”

The newsletter will seek to present key developments in an intelligent and engaging format for senior public leaders, the large number of professionals who follow government closely and the diaspora of stakeholders and vendors who work with government.

The Australian Financial Review’s Inside Government newsletter will launch this Friday, 20 November. To subscribe, visit: join.afr.com/insidegovernment
