“The Most Effective Political Ad Ever!” A Ronald Reagan Speech From 1980 Tears Trump To Shreds In Brutal Campaign

Donald Trump’s presidency is so on the nose that even members of his own Republican party are urging voters not to vote for him.

One such group is The Lincoln Project, a right-wing Republican “think tank” who don’t appear to like the incumbent president one little bit.

The group have just released a new TVC that uses former US President Ronald Reagan’s famous “City on a Hill” speech that saw him get elected to the Oval Office in a landslide way back in 1980. Reagan served two terms as president and died in 2004 aged 93.

The ad – which one commentator called “one of the most effective political ads I’ve ever seen” – pits Reagan’s optimisitic vision for the US 30 years ago against imagery of the current state of play under Trump and asks Republicans: “Has your party left you?”

Reagan says in his famous speech: “Together, tonight, let us say that America is still united, still strong, still compassion, still willing to stand by those who are persecuted” while images of the Trump-era appear that images that include cities suffering from the coronavirus pandemic, high unemployment and civil unrest.

And when Reagan speaks of “victims of police states or government-induced torture or terror,” images of police attacking non-violent George Floyd protesters.
