Reports: Nine’s Today Set For A Jump Start On The Competition, Bringing Karl & Allison In From Early Jan

This year, Nine took rival Seven’s crown and won the 2019 TV ratings. And now, it appears the network is looking to get a head start in 2020, with reports suggesting new hosts Karl Stefanovic and Allison Langdon will begin their Today hosting duties from January 6.

As reported in The Daily Telegraph, it’s believed Sunrise‘s team will not return until the end of January, which would give Today a head start to start earning some viewers before the official 2020 ratings year begins.

Both Nine and Seven declined B&T‘s request for comment.

While it’s all conjecture at this point, bringing in Stefanovic and Langdon up to a month earlier than their competitors wouldn’t be a bad move for Nine.

Today and Sunrise struggled throughout the year, and as Nine and Seven go head to head to vie for the 2020 ratings crown, bringing in the refreshed team of Stefanovic and Langdon couldn’t hurt.

The Today debacle aside, Nine rarely put a foot wrong in 2019.

From the buyout of Fairfax titles and Macquarie Media, while countless of its TV offerings have been huge hits (MAFS, Lego Masters and The Block all dominated this year’s ratings), it’s unlikely Nine will have a bad year in 2020, regardless of whether they bring in Stegfanovic and Langdon early.

However, all signs point to it being another tight race between Nine and Seven next year, so any move Nine can make to boost its chances of winning the year again will certainly not go amiss.

    1. In my view, Nine is making a big mistake bringing back Karl Stefanovic. He was never that successful previously on Today, an opinionated commentator that divided opinions often showed disrespect for interviewees and co-hosts and really was not a great reporter or host. Poor decision Nine.
