Facebook Bars Huawei From Preinstalling Its Apps In Latest Blow For The Embattled Chinese Telco

First it was Google, now Facebook is the latest tech giant to take action against controversial Chinese telco Huawei.

Reuters reported last week that Facebook will no longer allow the preinstallation of its apps on Huawei devices, just weeks after Google announced it would suspend business operations with the company.

According to the reports, the change will mean all new Huawei phones will no longer come with Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram.

Customers who already have Huawei phones will still be able to use the apps and receive updates.

It’s a decision that will significantly harm Huawei’s position in the market, especially when combined with the Google ban.

Although buyers of current Huawei phones will still technically be able to download these apps from the Google Play store, once the Google ban comes into effect these popular apps will be inaccessible for Huawei users.

The collective action of tech companies against Huawei comes after US President Donald Trump declared a national emergency to ban the sale and use of telecom equipment that poses a risk to national security, including Huawei.

Huawei has since said it will work on ways for its customers to get around these bans, however, decisions like the action from Facebook and Google will no doubt make this increasingly difficult.
