‘SOS’ Campaign Led By News Corp’s The Courier-Mail Scores Government Funding

A campaign involving 46 of News Corp’s newspaper mastheads has played a vital role in gaining funding for the introduction of a swimming and survival skills program in Queensland primary schools.

The landmark campaign, which was launched in January and led by The Courier-Mail, called for the Queensland government to stop being the only state which does not fund a comprehensive and compulsory swimming program in schools.

The ‘Save Our Schoolkids’ campaign, launched today, was backed by the Australian Water Safety Council, Royal Life Saving Society Australia, Surf Life Saving Australia, and leading Olympians Cate and Bronte Campbell.

The campaign prompted Queensland Education Minister Grace Grace to hold a series of meetings with key industry groups. Following the meetings, she announced the government would commit to additional funding for the initiative.

The Courier-Mail editor Sam Weir said the campaign is a great example of what the power of journalism can achieve.

“It was the first time that 46 mastheads have united to campaign on such an important issue,” he told B&T.

“Swimming is central to Queensland life and we are delighted that all state primary school students will be taught vital swimming and survival skills in this Australian-first program.”
