ALDI’s Tax Needs A Good Look At: Wesfarmers’ Big Boss

Wesfarmers chief executive Richard Goyder said there should be a review of ALDI’s accounts to make sure the discount supermarket is paying taxes.

Speaking at the American Chamber of Commerce lunch in Melbourne, the CEO and managing director said new competitors to the Australian market should be on the same playing field as Coles and Woolworths.

“They should be paying corporate tax in Australia and they should be very transparent,” Goyder said during his presentation.

“I think someone should go and have a good look at how much tax ALDI pays in this country.”

After the speech Goyder told The Australian he was unaware how much ALDI actually pays in tax.

“All I’m saying is we should all operate on the same basis and that includes you pay tax in the country where you make the earnings,” said Goyder. “Ask them to tell you how much corporate tax they [ALDI] pay, I’ll tell you how much we pay.”
