Campaign: Richie McCaw’s Superfan Returns In Latest MasterCard Spot

Life doesn’t get any better for fanatical rugby fan Tim who gets to take his “best mate”, New Zealand rugby superstar Richie McCaw, on a mystery trip courtesy of MasterCard.

Tim returns in a third instalment of MasterCard New Zealand’s PayPass promotion, created by McCann Australia.

The 30-second TVC, titled “Surprise”, shows Tim crashing a press conference to whisk away McCaw on the MasterCard mystery trip he won. The spot aims to encourage people to ‘Tap & Go’ to register for the MasterCard PayPass promotion for a chance to win a mystery trip worth $20,000.

Entrants can choose from a Mystery Beach, City or Adventure package, each including at least seven nights’ accommodation, flights, $3,000 spending money and much more.

Tim made his first appearance in MasterCard New Zealand’s advertising to promote card usage, in 2012, in a spot titled “Check In”. Last year, Tim enthusiastically welcomed a trio of rugby players, including Richie McCaw, to his wedding in the second instalment of the campaign, “Wedding”.

Both TVCs were voted by the public as Best Ad in New Zealand at the 2012 and 2013 Fair Go awards.

Dejan Rasic, executive creative director of McCann Sydney, said: “This latest installment in the Tim and Richie campaign continues to build their special relationship. Everyone had a lot of fun with this one and we had a great team of people to bring it to life.”

Adam Stevens from Robber’s Dog also returned as director for the third time.

In addition to TV, the campaign includes out-of-home, social media and digital.
