“Misread Its Audience!” Barrie Cassidy Slam’s The ABC’s Coverage Of The Queen’s Death

Former Insiders host, Barrie Cassidy has slammed ABC’s wall-to-wall coverage of the Queen’s death.

In a tweet that has received over 13,000 likes, Cassidy casts a critical eye on his former network’s coverage and wrote, “I suspect the ABC has misread its audience.

“If you want wall-to-wall royalty, you can get it elsewhere in spades. The ABC is better when it offers an alternative to populism.”

The tweet kicked off a pretty loud conversation about the fact that ABC has taken the same approach to the major networks and dedicated a bulk of its content to remembering, celebrating and even critiquing The Queen.

One, tweeter user replied and wrote, “We pay for this appalling,” Another wrote, “I’m all mourned out, and we’ve got another week of this!”

In fact, the network has been so dedicated to coverage, Ita Butrose, who’s made a career out of commenting on the monarchy has opted to stick to the ABC and not air out her views on any other major network.

It is a tough one because the network is known for offering something different from the more mainstream stations. You know, fewer dating shows and more emphasis on less clickbait television. It’s seen as perhaps an alternative to the big networks, not as a direct competitor.

But choosing to cover the Queen’s death so intensely has meant it is competing directly against Seven, Nine and Network 10.

On the other hand, The Queen’s death is still a huge event, and ABC does have the kind of clever talent that can offer interesting thoughts and opinions on the monarchy. Ita Butrose not weighing in on this event would be a complete waste.

Honestly, it is a damned if they do, and damned if they don’t situation.
