“Look Out OnlyFans!” Instagram Introduces Paid Subscription Service

London, UK - July 30, 2018: The buttons of the photo app Instagram, surrounded by WhatsApp, Facebook, Messages and other apps on the screen of an iPhone.

Instagram is now testing out a paid subscription model for creators.

While paying for content has definitely become a thing, Only Fans or Pateron anyone?  Instagram has previously shied away from introducing a paid model to it’s platform.

Sure the platform is crammed with influencers making big bucks but it’s through third-party sponsors and collaborations. For instance, Kylie Jenner isn’t actually getting paid by Instagram, Instagram is just providing the platform.

This is why you’ll often see Instagram influencers have an OnlyFans account or a Pateron account linked in their bio – because they are offering more content but only for paid subscribers.

However, it’s all about to change because Instagram has made an announcement via it’s official blog, “Based on strong creator feedback, we’re ready to now bring this business model to creators on Instagram.

“With Instagram Subscriptions, creators can develop deeper connections with their most engaged followers and grow their recurring monthly income by giving subscribers access to exclusive content and benefits, all within the same platform where they interact with them already.”

The subscription service will have a couple of interesting features.

  • Subscriber Lives: Creators can broadcast exclusive Lives to their subscribers, allowing them to engage more deeply.
  • Subscriber Stories: Creators can create stories just for their subscribers, allowing them to share exclusive content and to use interactive story stickers with their most engaged followers only.
  • Subscriber Badges: Creators will see a subscriber badge next to comments and messages so they can easily identify their subscribe

Currently, Instagram is trialling this service in the United States with only 10 creators. Followers will now be able to pay to see extra content from their favourite influencers.

This change will allow for creators to set how much followers have to pay to see extra content and allow for creators to make a base income.

Naturally, this is pretty big news and Twitter has already weighed in!

It will be interesting to see if the app rolls this feature worldwide and what influencers jump on board.
