Facebook has released information on how the platform has been used to raise money for nonprofits and individual causes through fundraising tools across Facebook and Instagram.

Facebook’s fundraising tools have been used to raise $US5 billion, while in Australia 2.3 million Aussies have donated using Facebook Fundraisers.

“Every day, people tap into their networks on Facebook and Instagram to inspire generosity and support causes they care about,” the company said.

“From funding medical research to donating school supplies to kids in need or supporting the fight for racial justice, we can all do more together. And every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference.”

Most donations are around $32, according to the data, while there have been 85 million organisers and donors in total.

In Australia, data suggests that women are more generous than men when it comes to donating on Facebook. Women contributed 63 per cent of the total amount fundraised on Facebook in 2020.

Additionally, women in Australia created 70 per cent of groups on Facebook last year. Women also took the lead on creating supportive communities and rallying resources when COVID hit last year.
