Radio personality and comedian Kate Langbroek has returned from Italy to rediscover Melbourne’s iconic Chapel Street Precinct, which has seen a post-lockdown renaissance of business over summer.

Langbroek has stitched the words ‘Support Local’ on her sleeve, making visits to many Chapel Street Precinct businesses with a film crew capturing each of the business owners reactions for the precinct’s latest campaign.

These surprise moments will be posted across Langbroek’s social media channels to promote the ongoing campaign: TWO WORDS, SUPPORT LOCAL.

“In the last year, like many of us, I dreamt of freedom, so what a treat to be set free on Chapel Street  to rediscover its restaurants, bars and shops,” Langbroek said. “In the two years I have been away, that iconic strip has been reborn.

“There are so many new businesses; pop-ups and outdoor spaces. And in the middle of this buzz are the stalwarts of the strip. It’s such an exciting, buzzy place to be—and it’s now dog-friendly! It is—dare I say it—a little bit European, and a lot Melburnian. And I will never take it for granted again.”

Chapel Street Precinct general manager Chrissie Maus claimed this summer had been the best in years for Chapel Street, adding: “we’ve loved how Kate has been documenting it.”

“Our businesses are bustling with people eager to forget lockdown and families are coming from all corners of Victoria to visit our massive breakout hit public art installation, Robot SPACEland,” Maus said.

“This summer there has seen an unprecedented number of shops opening and their success can be seen in the increased foot traffic across South Yarra, Windsor and Prahran.

“Our community has come out of COVID with a passion for supporting their community and local business. The #supportlocal message was heard loud and clear.”

Maus explained that the ‘Two Words. Support Local’ campaign is unapologetically simple, stripped back and straight to the point. This was strategically rolled out to cut through the COVID noise and to make sure the precinct’s critically important message was heard.

City of Stonnington Mayor Cr Kate Hely said: “Our community has embraced their local businesses, realising that by supporting them, their community will thrive. This is both a thank you and a reminder, please continue to spend your money with local businesses rebuilding post lockdown.”
