Google Data Reveals World’s Most Popular Takeaways; Chinese Tops For Aussies

It may be frosty relations between Beijing and Canberra at the moment but that hasn’t stopped Chinese topping the list of Australia’s favourite takeaway food.

However, Aussies’ choice for a dim-sim was at odds with the rest of the world where pizza topped the list as the globe’s preferred takeaway.

The list was compiled by insurance website MoneyBeach.co.uk and involved 100 countries.

With the world’s consumption of takeaway meals having increased due to forced restaurant closures in 2020, MoneyBeach.co.uk turned to global Google search data to reveal what we’re all ordering in the most. This was achieved by ranking average monthly search volumes for terms associated with ordering a takeout; the most searched for food of choice within each country topping its specific ranking.

An impressive 29 countries favoured a Chinese takeaway, which ranked second. These included Australia, New Zealand and somewhat surprisingly, the United Kingdom, beating fifth placed fish and chips and sixth placed Indian food.

Mike Rees, CEO of MoneyBeach.co.uk commented: “We recently offered the chance for a lucky person to get paid for taste testing festive takeout options, and the high levels of interest and 9,000+ applications we received made us want to look a bit deeper into the world of takeaway food.

A good takeout has become even more important this year as many have largely been unable to eat out, and it has been interesting to find that two choices (pizza and Chinese food) are head and shoulders above the competition!”
