December has seen the launch of a new beauty company, committed to taking plastic out of the beauty supply chain, led by a trio of former advertising elites.

The new company, known as Flavedo & Albedo, make high performance colour cosmetics, with no plastic packaging, and is the brainchild of ex-Clemenger directors Emily Perrett and Aleks Allen, and former ECD of Maud, Burberry and Stella McCarntney Toby Norris.

“Every year, the cosmetics industry produces at least 76.8 billion pieces of plastic packaging,” Flavedo & Albedo said in a statement.

“Most of those pumps, custom bottles, lids and palettes aren’t or can’t be recycled. This makes the cosmetics industry one of the biggest contributors to plastic waste.”

Company founder Emily Perrett added: “We just couldn’t reconcile our love of makeup and our plastic landfill anxiety.

“It’s wrong that an eyeshadow palette should live 1,000 years longer than you do. We saw an opportunity to build a brand with strong sustainability credentials that was still great fun. We hope we’ve made something you’d actually want to have in your makeup bag.”

Flavedo & Albedo has tackled the design challenge by working with aluminium, glass, cork and sustainable timber.

All paper stocks are post-consumer recycled and soy based inks are used wherever possible. The company only sell direct, so that they can remove plastic from the supply chain.
