A political ad for Georgian Senator Kelly Loeffler, who is estimated to have a net worth of at least US$800 million, has argued that she knows what it feels like to wait on a pay cheque.

It was swiftly condemned across social media after Washington-based newspaper The Hill shared the advertisement, which was retweeted by Washington College Starr Center fellow Jason Patterson.

Patterson, whose retweet has received more than 167 thousand likes, said of the ad: “She is worth 500 million dollars. She’s is the wealthiest United States senator. She is running against a man who grew up in the projects.”

Loeffler, who is married to the chairman of the New York Stock Exchange, Jeffrey Sprecher, is, however, estimated to be worth well over US$500 million, and considered the wealthiest member of congress, according to Forbes. The American business magazine estimates the pair are worth between US$800 million to US$1 billion.

According to multiple reports, Loeffler and her husband were investigated for insider trading after making investment moves on 24 January, on the day she received a coronavirus pandemic intelligence briefing. However, she was eventually cleared by Donald Trump’s Department of Justice and the Republican-led Senate Ethics Committee.

After being appointed to the senate seat in December 2019 by Georgian Governor Brian Kemp after Johnny Isakson resigned for health reasons, Loeffler is fighting to retain her Georgian seat.

She finished second in the election last month and now faces a January run-off against Raphael Warnock.

“It’s so important to have Senator Loeffler in the Senate, especially right now. What we need more than ever is a business mind,” former deputy director of the Georgia Republican Party Janelle King said in the political advertisement.

“We need someone who understands not just how to write paycheques and sign paycheques but how it feels like waiting on that paycheque.”
