Women Leading Tech Moves Online For First-Ever Awards

It’s the sentence you’re probably all sick and tired of reading in 2020: we’ve decided to move our upcoming event online.

But unfortunately, this is the case for our inaugural B&T Women Leading Tech Awards on 8 September 2020.

We have made this decision based on the advice from public health officials within the Australian government.

Although it will be delivered as a virtual event, we’re still extremely excited to hear from our speakers and to recognise all the female tech talent in the industry during the awards.

As a reminder, we’ll be handing out awards for:

  • data science
  • design
  • engineering
  • entrepreneur/founder
  • executive leader
  • marketing
  • mentor
  • product
  • sales
  • advocacy (for companies that have demonstrated leadership in the space)

You’ll also be able to hear from our keynote speaker Jamila Gordon, who founded Lumachain in 2018 and was quickly able to partner with Microsoft and secure $3.5 million of funding within 18 months.

Her background includes roles as Group Chief Information Officer of Qantas Airways and Leighton Holdings/CIMIC. Prior to this, she was a global executive with IBM based in Europe. Jamila has also worked with AXA Insurance and ABN AMRO Bank.

She also has a remarkable personal story, which saw her forced to work from the age of five, rather than getting an education in her native Somalia, Jamilla.

At 18, she escaped the Somali civil war alone and found her way to Kenya and then on to Australia.

The event will be hosted by our MC Rae Johnston, who is a multi-award-winning STEM journalist, Wiradjuri woman, mother, broadcaster and voice actor.
