Facebook Ramps Up COVID-19 Relief Efforts

Tech giant Facebook is increasing its COVID-19 relief efforts across all platforms.

The company has recorded a 50 per cent increase in total messaging in countries hit hardest by the virus over the last month, as well as a surge in IG Live and Facebook live usage and a 1000 per cent increase in group video calling in Italy.

In Australia, there are now 100,000 people in various COVID-19 support groups.

With so many more users coming into the ecosystem, Facebook is working to ensure everyone can access credible and accurate information.

This includes new pop-ups for users searching ‘coronavirus’, directing them to the WHO website.

It is also removing false claims and conspiracy theories that have been flagged by leading global health organizations, such as statements like ‘drinking bleach can cure coronavirus’ and claims social distancing doesn’t work.

Additionally on Instagram, Facebook will remove COVID-19 accounts from account recommendations, and is working to remove some COVID-19 related content from Explore, unless posted by a credible health organization.

On Instagram, the ‘stay home’ sticker and story is being used by celebrities and users alike to encourage social distancing.

There are also trending initiatives such as ‘@WedShed’, for those who have had to postpone their wedding due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Finally, Facebook has created a $100M grant program to help 30,000 small businesses around the world, including Australia to help these businesses easily find the help, training and support they need.
