Foxtel Withdraws Bid For Key Rugby Rights, As Optus Reportedly Swoops In

Foxtel has pulled its offer for the five-year rights to the Super Rugby competition, the National Rugby Championships and Wallabies Tests, as reported in the SMH.

However, it’s believed the embattled company may still be able to reach a deal with Rugby Australia.

It is understood Optus is eyeing the rights and it looks to expand its digital live-sport offering. Reports suggest the deal could be worth as much as $30 million per year.

In a statement, Rugby Australia CEO Raelene Castle said RA was in general discussions, however, no formal negotiations had occurred.

The deal would commence in 2021.

If Optus secures the rights, it will be the first time since 1996 that the Super Rugby competition would not be broadcasted on traditional TV.

Recently, Optus outbid Foxtel for rights to the Rugby World Cup in Japan, yet the global governing body chose to stay with Foxtel.
