Merrick Watts Is The ‘Celebrity Intern’ In New American Express Campaign By Marcel Sydney

Creative agency Marcel Sydney has teamed up with American Express to give small businesses owners the help they need; introducing the ‘Celebrity Intern’.

The new campaign supports the American Express Business Explorer Credit Card, which was launched last year to give small and medium-sized businesses greater flexibility in managing their cash flow and greater rewards on their spending.

Australian small business owners are time-poor, risk-taking, multi-tasking champions. However, sometimes their passion for their business can mask how truly difficult it can be to run one.

To prove just how well American Express understands this, the ‘Celebrity Intern’ shows Aussie comedian Merrick Watts being put into local small businesses to see how he measures up when faced with the behind-the-scenes realities of running a small business.

The series of ads show the happy-go-lucky Watts trying his best to keep up with the day-in, day-out demands of running a small business in six completely different situations.

Peter Likoudis, vice president of marketing for global commercial payments at American Express, said: “We’ve taken a new direction with our ‘Celebrity Intern’ campaign, using humour to show small business owners that we understand that running a small business isn’t easy but that we are there to back them along the way.”

Scott Huebscher, executive creative director at Marcel Sydney, said: “It was a great brief to be asked to come up with something completely different for American Express.

“It’s been fun to work with them and Merrick to create light-hearted and humorous comms amidst a category that is typically serious.”
