Sydney Initiative Uses Real-Time Data To Help Homeless People

A collaboration between non-denomination charity Jewish house and leading opinion site, The Big Smoke, will see a call-out to Sydney’s CBD to better understand real-time data around Sydney’s rough sleepers, and to work together to give them a more comfortable 2016 Festive Season.

The initiative will see Sydney-siders filling out an online form on The Big Smoke when they see a rough sleeper, which will help to understand where and when Sydney’s homeless are positioning themselves around the city, while capturing real-time data.

The appeal aims to compel the community to actively participate in helping to identify and support the homeless in our community through a campaign which captures and collates the data.

The Big Smoke will then go out on Christmas Eve and hand packs to Sydney’s homeless, including a comfortable blow up lounge which is then foldable and easily carried around. The lounges will also promote the homeless helpline number, with a call to action to help get people off the streets and into homes.

The initiative is an innovative way to partner the power of community with the value in collecting real time data.

Founder of The Big Smoke Alexandra Tselios said, “We saw an opportunity to connect the value of Jewish House, who helps Sydney’s homeless in tangible ways every year, with the reach and engagement of The Big Smoke’s community.”

Rabbi Mendel Kastel of Jewish House said, “To help tackle complex issues like street homelessness, Jewish House knows it’s about building networks of cooperation. This needs to include members of the public in partnership with new technology.”
