Newspaper ABCs: Worrying Times Continue For Fairfax Mastheads

Fairfax’s mooted plans to cull the weekday print editions of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age will continue apace judging by the titles’ disappointing ABC figures released this morning.

The Sydney Morning Herald is now averaging 95,733 sales per week and The Age 87,979. Oddly, Fairfax did not include its digital sales in this audit.

However, there’s still hope for the weekend print editions with The SMH averaging just over 181,000 in sales and The Age 152,471.

There was more bad news for Fairfax with The Canberra Times now selling a dangerous 16,421 during the week and 25,571 on Saturdays.

As expected, there was few stars in today’s newspaper ABCs, however, if there was a good news story then News’ The Australian probably grabbed the bragging rights.

Weekday sales (both print and digital) of The Oz was up 2.3 per cent to 178,141. While The Weekend Australian rose 1.7 per cent to total sales to 301,790.

Other highlights (or lowlights) included:

  • Sydney’s Daily Tele was down 7.1 per cent to total (print and digital sales) of 233,847.
  • The Saturday edition of The Tele fell 6.7 per cent and The Sunday Telegraph was down 8.2 per cent.
  • Fairfax’s Sun-Herald is averaging 182,576 in print sales, but again digital sales were not included in the audit.
  • Fairfax’s The Australian Financial Review dropped its weekday sales by 9.2 per cent to just over 48,000 and weekend sales fell 9.8 per cent to 49,915.
  • The Saturday edition of The West Australian tumbled 9 per cent to 236,216.
  • New’s Herald Sun in Melbourne saw a 1.6 per cent hit to its weekday sales to 392,585 and a 1.7 per cent slide in weekend sales to just over 400,000.
