Victoria has officially been announced as the host state of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with many of the events taking parts in the regional areas.
“This will be a Commonwealth Games like no other. We promised we wouldn’t be doing a re-run of 2006, as successful as that was,” said Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews.
“This is also about creating jobs, some nearly 4,000 jobs during the Commonwealth Games and some 3,000 enduring jobs thereafter.”
The opening ceremony of the games is set to be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, while the other events are to take place in the regional areas across the state. Athlete villages are to be established in Ballarat, Geelong, Bendigo and Gippsland.
This will be the first time that the awards are held in an entire state in the 92-year history of the event, as they were previously held in a single city.
This year’s games are se to be held in Birmingham of England, which replaced South African city Durban as they were stripped of the right to host due to financial constraints.
After Birmingham claimed this year’s event, Victoria essentially ran unopposed for the rights to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games as there were no other bidders in the running.
