British Vogue is being lauded after it featured an hijab-wearing model on its cover for the first time in the magazine’s 102-year history.
The stunning cover of the May edition of the fashion bible features nine women all from a variety of ethnic origins.
The cover includes Halima Aden and Adut Akech, who were born in the same refugee camp in Kenya. The models also include Radhika Nair, Korean Yoon Young Bae, Faretta, Fran Summers, Vittoria Ceretti, Selena Forrest and Paloma Elsesser.
Vogue’s UK editor Edward Enninful described the pioneering cover as a “new global idea”.
In his editor’s letter, Enninful wrote: “To me they represent a new global idea that anything is possible.The shoot was incredible, watching our group take such an important first step in their careers with this special Vogue cover. What really struck me, despite their varied backgrounds, was how similar they all were. Kind, engaged, socially minded and impressively sweet to one another.”
