R/GA Australia and long-time partner, the NRL, have launched “Rivalry Without Rival”, an immersive campaign telling the story of State of Origin’s long and rich rivalry through 40 years of the teams’ data.
Using data dating all the way back to the first SOO series, R/GA and the NRL wanted to bring to life the unexpected, insightful statistics and data through this campaign — allowing fans to explore sports’ greatest rivalry from unique perspectives.
Off the back of a successful Final Series and Grand Finals campaign, R/GA Australia and the NRL started to look into the history of data across a variety of aspects to show fans, by the numbers, how the competition between the two rivals has gotten fiercer through the years.
This is in celebration of the upcoming State of Origin series, which for the first time in its 40-year history, will be played over three consecutive weeks outside of the regular season. R/GA worked closely with the NRL’s internal team and VANDAL, a motion design agency, who managed the motion design and production of the film.
Kieran Antill, executive creative director, R/GA Australia commented: “Sports rivalry is about far more than a Win and Loss record, especially between these two iconic teams with a 40-year history. From stunning upsets, to the longest winning streak by a coach to the finer details of the game, we wanted to help the NRL surface these narratives and spark banter between fans. This is only the start of where we can go with data storytelling in sport.” s
