Pinterest has launched Hair Pattern, the first-of-its-kind search tool, created with BIPOC in mind, that empowers Pinners to search for hair inspiration across hair patterns.
The Hair Pattern search tool is the latest inclusive beauty feature from Pinterest, following AR Try On (available in the U.S. and UK) and Skin Tone Ranges.
Hair Pattern marks a major step forward for inclusivity in tech, and also responds to the millions of Pinners who are looking for an easier way to find the hair inspiration they are already searching for on Pinterest.
In this past month alone, there were over 120M searches for hair and over 5 billion Pins related to hair were created.
Among these top 500 trends, 17 per cent of hairstyle trends contain hair pattern keywords including “coi leray braids” (214X), “summer box braids” (75X) and “afro kinky hairstyles braids” (3X) .
To use hair pattern search:
- Open the Pinterest app
- Select the search icon
- Type “hairstyles” or “winter hairstyles” or “glam hair” into the search bar
- Select from one of the six hair patterns: 1) protective 2) straight 3) wavy 4) curly 5) coily 6) bald/shaved to see hair inspiration that is most relevant to them and their style.
Pinterest’s Head of Inclusive Product, Annie Ta, worked with BIPOC creators and pinners including Editorial Hair Stylist and Global Artistic Director of Amika, Naeemah LaFond, to help build and design the product.
A champion for diverse hair representation, LaFond advised on overall user experience and inclusive language alongside third party experts who ensured the inclusion of diverse users and perspectives in the development process.
