Three Things I Learned From Tony Robbins To Get The Most Out Of My Career (& Life) In Media
Rather than pooh-pooh Tony Robbins, PHD planning director Danielle Russell (pictured below) said he changed her life and her career. Find out how in this guest post…
Like most people in today’s world who reach the tender (ahem) age of 29, the feeling of coming to a crossroad in life had become very real. After ‘falling into media’ in my early 20s, I had followed the typical stream of progression – co-ordinator to exec, exec to manager and so on, without really pausing to reflect on what I wanted my future to shape up like.
I had moved into a planning role to shake things up a bit after being in a digital trading role for a couple of years; however, I wasn’t all that sure about what I wanted next. In addition to my crossroads dilemma, as I started to creep closer to the big 3.0, panic set in that I hadn’t, and wasn’t, accomplishing what I wanted to in life. Questions started to arise; I woke up one day and thought, “Is this life fulfilling enough to be my forever?”
Since then, I’ve come to learn that that’s the question we should all be asking ourselves, and if the answer is no, then you (like me) will know something needs to change.
“Action is the most important key to any success.” – Tony Robbins
An opportunity to rise out of my ‘quarter life crisis’ arose when PHD approached me to say I had been selected for their SMART fund – an initiative that gives several agency employees the opportunity to pitch for any type of training that would ultimately propel them forward. I chose a four-day seminar aptly titled ‘Unleash The Power Within’ by life coach and business strategist, Tony Robbins. And just like that, my life began to change.
Unleash The Power Within, is no ordinary seminar; it’s probably one of the most engaging, confrontational and moving seminars available out there. It’s designed for you to leave with a refreshed and driven mind, and ultimately be the proverbial stepping stone to a life you dream of.
From the 40-plus hours of intense immersion learning at the Robbins seminar, I was able to take away some key strategies that I implemented into my life and immediately begun seeing results. You can find a ton of Tony Robbins material online that will help you do the same, however I thought I’d share my top three learnings from my experience with you:
STRATEGY ONE: The Power of ‘Peak State’
How we show up and how we feel is determined by the state we are in. Our emotions can control everything in our life: our mood, our decisions and our actions.
“The difference between peak performance and poor performance is not intelligence or ability; most often it’s the state that your mind and body is in.” —Tony Robbins
Robbins’ Peak State is constructed of three forces that control our emotions – our physiology, our language and our focus.
Physiology How we use our body affects how we feel mentally and emotionally. Ever noticed how great you feel after a sweaty gym session/walk outside in the fresh air? Being mindful of the positive changes you make to your physiology is important as we need to recognise what makes us feel good, so we can tap into this when we need to reach a peak state. Sometimes just putting a smile on your face can be enough.
Focus. What you put your focus on is where you set your intention. As Robbins says, “Where focus goes, energy flows.” By this he means we need to focus on what we want and are working toward, instead of the things holding you back. By setting your focus on the positives, your mental state will shift drastically because energy is flowing in this direction.
Language. How you talk to yourself determines how you behave and feel. If we ask questions like, “Why do bad things always happen to me?”, instead of, “What can I do to better my situation?”, we are more likely to feel powerless. By changing our internal dialogue, we can improve our peak state.
STRATEGY TWO: Surround yourself with quality people
Finding success involves carefully choosing the people we surround ourselves with. You may have heard that proximity is power – well it’s true!
“The quality of a person’s life is most often a direct reflection of the expectations of their peer group.” – Robbins
To evaluate this, here is a simple three-step process that can easily be actioned at any time:
- Identify relationships that are holding you back; let go of the Negative Nancy’s
- When you free yourself from negative relationships, you become more prepared to focus on what really matters to you
- Elevate your standards; surround yourself with high performers
- Actively choose to surround yourself with colleagues who have ambition and elevate the standard of what you will or won’t tolerate
- Find someone who is already getting the results you want; stalk your idol’s every move
- Find someone who is already getting the results you want, model their behavior and learn their strategy for success
In my case, I found a mentor who inspires me, and began spending more time with my friends who motivated me and less time with those who sucked the energy out of me. I’ve not only grown exponentially in the past year and started kicking personal life goals, but now feel I have a solid group of quality peers. #Squadgoals
STRATEGY THREE: Prime your day
At the start of each day, I follow Tony’s ‘priming’ exercise. It’s rooted in yoga and mindfulness meditation, and is intended to get you in an energised, positive state that will carry you through the day.
Follow the below meditation ritual somewhere you won’t be disturbed for 10 minutes:
- Perform a breathing exercise
- Express gratitude
- Experience connection
- Visualise success
I have found the visualisation exercise extremely powerful. There’s lots of talk out there about the Power of Attraction and how, when we focus on something, we see more of it. So if we visualise positive goals, we’ll see more of what we want and we’ll create more motivation and energy to do what we need to do to make this a reality. In my case, I started to focus on being a motivated team member (which I now am), living close to the beach, (which I now do), and being with a partner who loves me and who I can trust fully (finally got him in the bag!).
Once I achieved these things, I shifted my focus to other areas of my life where I wanted to succeed and am in anticipation of them coming true!
I leave you here with two questions:
ARE YOU HAPPY WITH YOUR CURRENT LIFE TO BE YOUR FOREVER LIFE?
THE LIFE YOU SHOULD BE LEADING CAN HAPPEN IN A MOMENT
ARE YOU READY TO MAKE YOUR MOMENT HAPPEN?
