Nine Taps Sonny Bill Williams For Cross-Code Commentary Gig

Stan today announced international superstar, former national and international Rugby and Rugby League champion, and undefeated heavyweight boxing champion Sonny Bill Williams has joined Stan Sport and will also join the commentary lineups for both Stan and Nine’s Wide World of Sports.

The announcement comes following the kick off of the 2021 Super Rugby AU and Super Rugby Aotearoa seasons on Stan’s new add on sport package Stan Sport.

One of only two people to become a dual-code international after first representing New Zealand in Rugby League, and part of an elite group of players who have won multiple Rugby World Cups, Sonny Bill Williams joins the Stan Sport and WWOS commentary teams following his second stint with the Sydney Roosters during last year’s NRL season – after previously leading them to premiership glory in 2013.

Sonny Bill Williams said: “I’m honoured to have this opportunity to join the Stan Sport team. Before I decided to step into this space I just asked myself that simple question: is it going to be challenging? And the answer was an overwhelming yes.

“I know I represent a lot of young Polynesian boys and young Kiwi boys. We represent so much on the field. But when it comes to off the field, we’re not really in this space. So just being able to jump into that space and see how we go, that’s what I’m looking forward to the most.”

To hear exclusively from Williams on his new appointment and what his future holds, tune in to Rugby Heaven at 8:00pm AEDT next Tuesday night, March 16th exclusively on Stan Sport.

Anchored by renowned Rugby hosts and journalists Roz Kelly and Nick McArdle, Stan Sport’s new commentary team will see Williams join as a featured expert alongside the likes of David Campese and Michael Cheika, plus former Wallabies Tim Horan, Morgan Turinui, Drew Mitchell and Justin Harrison, former All Blacks legend Andrew Mehrtens and former dual-code international star Allana Ferguson.

Experienced commentators Sean Maloney and Andrew Swain are also on board the team to call every kick, try and tackle from every match this year.
