Nike Scores Emmy For Contentious Colin Kaepernick Ad

Nike has won the “outstanding commercial” award at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sunday.

The brand has not won the award since 2002.

The winning ad titled “Dream Crazy” first circulated in September last year and features former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and other prominent athletes like Serena Williams, Odell Beckam Jr., and LeBron James.

“Dream Crazy” was created out of Wieden & Kennedy Portland and produced out of Park Pictures and Joint Portland.

In 2016, Kaepernick famously started to kneel for the pre-game national anthem in protest against racial injustice in the United States. Following his protest, Kaepernick settles a case with the league where he alleged he had been blackballed by team owners for his protests.

Nike’s Instagram followers jumped by tens of thousands following the ad’s premiere, and Nike has since created more ads in the series, including one for the Women’s World Cup.

The ad was nominated alongside Apple, Netflix and Sandy Hook Promise.
