As one of the biggest entertainment companies in the world, there is no doubt Netflix has the scale and resourcing available to take the gaming world by storm.
That’s why many have been interested to hear about the highly-anticipated plans for Netflix Gaming.
After years of rumour, Netflix finally confirmed it was getting into gaming earlier this year, via a vague announcement during the company’s Q2 earnings report.
“We’re also in the early stages of further expanding into games, building on our earlier efforts around interactivity (eg, Black Mirror Bandersnatch) and our Stranger Things games,” Netflix said in a statement.
“We view gaming as another new content category for us, similar to our expansion into original films, animation and unscripted TV. Games will be included in members’ Netflix subscription at no additional cost similar to films and series. Initially, we’ll be primarily focused on games for mobile devices.”
Now more than a month later and we’ve finally had our first taste of what Netflix Gaming will look like.
Netflix has kicked off a small trial for its gaming service in Poland.
As it turns out, Netflix Gaming will be offered as a free add-on within the Netflix android app.
To launch, Netflix has unveiled two new games – Stranger Things 3 (which was already available as a standalone app on Google Play) and Stranger Things 1984, which is a rebrand of the mobile game which was made available in 2017.
“Let’s talk about Netflix games. Starting today, users in Poland can try out two mobile games on Android: Stranger Things 1984 and Stranger Things 3. We are at an early stage and we still have a lot of work to do in the coming months, but this is our first step,” Netflix said on social media.
While the games are currently only available in Poland (and therefore are all in Polish), early reports suggest the games do not include any ads or paid extras.
Netflix Gaming is expected to be added to the iOS app in the coming months.
