News Corp In Talks With Nine Over Stan Venture

It has been reported News Corp has approached Nine about a potential video streaming partnership involving Stan and Foxtel.

Stan is Australia’s main domestic competition against Netflix.

The platform was launched in 2015 as a joint partnership between Fairfax Media and Nine, and currently has 1.5 million subscribers.

Last year in December, the streaming platform signed a deal with Disney that gave it exclusive access to Star Wars and Marvel movies.

Following the Nine and Fairfax merger late last year, Stan is expected to begin turning a profit by July this year.

News Corp previously tried dipping its toes in streaming with the now-inoperative Presto, which was a joint venture between Seven West Media and Foxtel.

According to SMHsources close to Nine have described the conversation around the potential partnership as “general” and that there are several companies looking to make a deal.

Nine denied B&T‘s request for comment.

While Stan may opt for a local partner, industry insiders believe Stan may choose to make a deal with Disney.

There has been speculation that Disney will partner with Stan in order to benefit from its existing subscriber base rather than launch an entirely new Australian platform.
