Heckler Brings Books To Life At LitFest

To mark Newington College’s ninth biennial LitFest, design, animation and visual effects house Heckler has brought a selection of novels to life by projecting them onto the walls of the prestigious Sydney college.

Thirty authors attended LitFest and accomplished children’s and young adult author Tristan Bancks who wrote ‘Life and Other Stuff I Made Up’ was the guest speaker.

In addition, the Centre for Ethics hosted a panel discussion with leading journalists including Greg Bearup, Angus Grigg, David Marr and Lisa Murray on the subject of ethics, democracy and journalism.

Heckler recorded students narrating excerpts from a selection of novels and then used these to voice over animations of the cover art, which were then projection mapped onto Newington College’s walls.

Newington College hosted its first LitFest in 2001 to promote a love of reading within the school and the wider community, and to help school-aged children discover a world of new stories and adventure through the written word.

In conjunction with LitFest, the wider Newington community is also raising funds for Room to Read a charitable organisation that gives the gift of education and literacy to children in third world countries.

Heckler co-founder and executive producer, Will Alexander said: “LitFest is a brilliant initiative which highlights the joy of reading and encourages young people to pick up books.

“Heckler is delighted to have been commissioned by Newington College to bring some of these amazing books to life across the three days of the festival by using its own students to read sections of the books and then project them on to the walls of the college.”
