Social Media Isn’t Happy Eddie McGuire Missed Collingwood’s AFLW Opener

Over the weekend it was the inaugural AFL Women’s (AFLW) competition between Collingwood and Carlton at IKON Park. You would imaging the presidents of the AFL sides would be in attendance- Cartlon’s president Mark LoGiudice was, but Collingwood’s Eddie McGuire was not.

An estimated 24,500 fans were at the AFLW game, with a thousand more turned away when Princes Park reached capacity, but McGuire was in Adelaide hosting the boxing match between Danny Green and Anthony Mundine.

A Collingwood spokesperson told Daily Mail that McGuire was booked to host the boxing match over a year ago, which is why he couldn’t attend. “Ed’s involvement as host was booked in last year, well in advance of the release of the AFLW fixture. Moreover, the date of last night’s match moved on a number of occasions,” the spokesperson said.

“Ed would certainly have been there if possible, something he explained on numerous occasions prior to the match and as late as Wednesday night when he hosted the launch of Collingwood’s AFLW season along with that of Collingwood’s netball team in the new national league.”
