Bill Shorten Wins 2019 Federal Election (On Facebook)

With the 2019 Federal Election now run and won, the results are in from Facebook and Instagram for who topped the online polls.

On Facebook, it was Bill Shorten and the Labor party that dominated.

Shorten took out the title of most discussed politician based on mentions and Labor was the most talked about political party on the site.

But it was another story on Instagram, where Scott Morrison led the conversation.

The returning Prime Minister’s account was the most-followed across the election period and his often personal and behind-the-scenes posts were deemed a successful way to engage with his audience.

His Mother’s Day curry pic was the top post of the entire campaign.

The insights also revealed the most talked about issues on Facebook during the election were foreign policy and economy.

As for hashtags, #onenation and #paulinehanson topped the list, followed by #democracysausage and #climateelection.

On Twitter, #DemocracySausage trended at #1 in around the country for more than seven and a half hours.

It also gained global traction, trending in nine countries and 114 cities around the world.

Australians shared a total of 28 million Tweets during the Federal Election.

Twitter was also shown to be an effective platform for connecting the government with the wider population.

71 per cent of people that contacted a member of government through Twitter received a reply.
