Seven axes Melissa Doyle's 7Two evening news

The Seven Network has axed Melissa Doyle’s 7pm new bulletin on 7Two, just nine months after she left Sunrise and was replaced by Samantha Armytage.

Doyle’s news gig on the Seven multichannel was axed to free up her schedule and allow her to pursue other Seven News projects according to reports.

A Seven spokesperson told television blog TV Tonight that Doyle is doing more overseas assignments as a senior correspondent and the 7pm bulletin “made it very hard”.

“So we’ve closed that bulletin down and all those resources are back in the newsroom. She has 4pm and other newsreading duties and senior correspondent stuff.”

Doyle has recently covered the Oscars from Los Angeles, the royal tour, Schapelle Corby’s release from a Bali prison, travelled to Jordan to report on the Syrian refugee crisis, the Blue Mountains bushfires and tropical Cyclone Ita.

Her Seven News at 4 duties will continue.

Doyle left Sunrise last year after 14 years amid rumours that she was forced to step down. Doyle denied she was given the boot and said “the rumour mill is working overtime”.

When her new position was announced Doyle said: “I’m honoured that the network has given me this incredible new opportunity and I am unbelievably excited about the new challenges ahead.”

Doyle was replaced as co-host by former Weekend Sunrise co-host Samantha Armytage.
